Popalock Charity (PC) was created in 2008 its purpose is to help raise awareness and funds for low-income families affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Popalock helps in meeting the needs of affected families through providing basic needs, such as rent payments, food, clothing, utilities, tuition payments, and outings for children. Popalock works to help relieve some of the financial stresses for parents a spouse who has been diagnosed with MS.

MS is a long-lasting disease that can affect the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves in the eyes. It can cause problems with vision, balance, muscle control, and other basic body functions. The effects of the disease and its symptoms are often different for each person who has the disease. Some have mild symptoms and will not need treatment, while others experience trouble getting around and doing daily tasks. MS occurs when the immune system attacks a fatty material called myelin, which wraps around your nerve fibers to protect them. Without this outer shell, your nerves become damaged.

Popalock Charity was named in honor of Robert “Poppy” Lamont Vercher, who was diagnosed at the age of 27 with an aggressive form of MS, single working father of 5, was now hit with a crippling disease, with no cure. As the family rallied together to look for programs and agencies to help with the daily needs of Robert and his children one thing became clear. 1. There was a great need for not only my family member but also for the many families facing the effects of the disease. 2. Many times children of afflicted parents are at risk of losing out on their childhood as they take on the role of caregiver to parents and younger siblings. Realizing that there were few or no organizations out there to meet or help their financial needs, from their daily necessities to fun outings, Popalock Charity was created.
